I love this article! This is the number one question a vegetarian gets, It´s as good idea to get protein from meat as it is to use milk as a source of cacium.

How do you see your body?

Killing us softly?

Jean Kilbourne´s  lecture on body image in marketing. Computer retouching and Photoshop. She has worked in this field for years and is also contributing to Miss representation´s video later in the post.

In 500 years what happened to the image of women?

Video on 500 years of women in art, where did we derail? Where did we get the standards of beauty that we hold today?

Where does it all end?

Video from Miss representation, a must see for all parents. Average American teenager is exposed to media 10 hours and 45 minutes every day! Girls get the message that the most important thing is how they look. It does not matter what a woman accomplishes. It all comes down to her looks.

I have two daughters, I want them to be valued on their talents and skills not their looks. I want them to have healthy body image. I thought I had a positive body image untill, I had a terrible moment of truth when I got married. I was in a state of shock when I saw the wedding pictures. My mind had been diluted by the image of how I should look. And I was greatly disappointed with the pictures. I  saw a flat chested woman with a small head and huge calf’s! It took me six months to get used to the photos, now I like them very much. But I had no idea how polluted my mind was until I had this experience.

Multiple brains?

Where is your brain located?

Poster depicting Steve Martin in the legendary comedy the man with two brains. An old classic

Is it true that we have more than one brain?  These ideas come from a pioneer in the research field Dr. Gershon. He writes about why we can feel in our stomach feelings as anxiety, fear and anger. The main reason is that serotonin ,that is like a messenger to the brain, is stored in the stomach. When we repress the feelings that our gut is trying to tell us about , we can cause ourselves to be sick. Some believe that all dis-eases come because of poor diet, lack of rest too much stress and repressed anger or repressed feelings. The whole article is linked above and it explains why we can feel in our gut. The gut feeling has logical explanation and there is no wonder why we say ; I can feel it in my gut.

The alternative

The funny thing is when I was reading about Gershon, I found another doctor a Doctor with a slightly different name Dr. Gerson. And he was remarkable character, I had already seen an interview with his daughter in the film food matters. The Gerson institute offers a alternative cancer treatment without the chemotherapy. It offers a program that is more natural, here is more about the very intriguing Dr. Gerson

Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless discusses the development of his world-famous dietary therapy and the struggles this medical pioneer faced as he challenged orthodox medicine with his nutritional protocol. This inspiring and uplifting biography follows Dr. Gerson through Nazi persecution, then persecution in the United States from the medical establishment, the continuation of his work despite the opposition, his questionable death and finally the present, where daughter Charlotte Gerson and the Gerson Institute work to continue his legacy and vision.

This is a video on the Gerson Miracle, the beginning and the continuing work of the Gerson Institute. It explains the body´s encounter with poisons. Clearly one more mind-blowing video.

This is an almost fifty minutes long video with Charlotte Gerson who is 90 years old! She is amazing. This is fifty minutes well spent I promise!

I simply love Charlotte Gerson, she is my role model. I want to be like her when I am 90!!

The body has remarkable healing powers, we only need to unleash the power.

The power to heal.

If you don´t have anything else planned on this saturday night, This is a film by 15-year-old Garret, called the Beautiful truth. It is about the Gerson therapy and health issues like how amalgam in fillings can deprive people of their health. The issue of food additives like MSG and aspartame is touched and the issue of GMO foods and much more! It is remarkable to witness the denial in the medical profession that say Dr. Gerson therapy is a hoax. If I had to choose today I would choose Dr.Gerson´s method without hesitation!

Why holistic?

What exactly is a holistic approach?

For me it means balance. Keeping balance in my life. I have had periods that I have eaten poorly, deprived the body of nourishment and fed it with sugar and coffee.

There are times that I have been emotionally absent from my family and put all my energy into my work. Borderline  workaholic, if you like. I have had moments when neither home nor work was a good place to be. In other words I was depressed.

In this post I am trying to explain what the holistic approach means to me. I dug up some links that I have found helpful and pictures that I have taken from other web sources but I have linked back to the source. The five elements of holistic approach are explained in the picture below. We need all of the elements to harmonize ,in order to feel whole. Ergo feel well, in the state of Well-being.

We know that exercise and nutrition contribute to our well-being but did you know that meditation and relaxation play as important role?

We need rest, exercise and nourishment to keep the body «machine» working but the mind  also needs rest, meditation unwinds us from stress. Stress in a contributing factor to many dis-eases of the body.Stress is a modern society health threat.Stress increases the PH value in the body. If the PH value is high we are more likely to get sick, than if the PH value is balanced.

The five pieces of our cake

Relationships Our relationships matter, it means that the people in your life can not be draining you of energy. In order to have balanced relationship, you will have to find a way to stop letting people robbing you of your energy. The weird thing is that we often have draining relationships in our immediate family. It is worth working on because these are the people you can usually not just stop seeing.

Career We tend to get absorbed in our work. But we can not let it overrides everything else in our life. I have tendencies to get too wrapped up in the things I am doing. Sometimes it would drain me of all my energy and when I came back home there was just the shell left. I was deflated for energy from my work.

Spirituality We need to have some refuge, it does not matter what name we put on it. If it is a higher power or if we practice meditation. We need a break every now and then. To tune down and reconnect with ourselves. I find it helpful to study the balance of my chakras.

physical activity The best we can do for our body is just do 30 minutes a day of exercise. We need to run the machinery so it won´t get rusty and stiff. Walk, ride a bicycle. Find a steep hill and walk up it. Go to the gym. Whatever suits your rhythm and preference.

Nourishment We need good balanced diet and plenty of water. Water is the base. Food is a big part og our lives. It´s the hardest part to keep balanced. Our cravings can tell us la little about our imbalances, on mind-body green  there is a summary of food cravings and the source for the craving.

There are holistic resources like the holistic health library that have information regarding all parts of our holistic living.

The thing is there must be balance between the ares of our lives. Look at it as a cake , is just one cake. You are it. If work is too big of a slice the others are smaller. The cake is not getting bigger. There are 24 hours in a day. You need to divide them wisely. for you.

I find the chakra Wisdom helpful in understanding the balance. Here is a chakra wisdom from sspirituality and self-help . The seven chakras are explained. This blog for example is my way of regaining strength in my throat chakra. The chakra that deals with self-expression and communication.

Seven chakras meditation has an online support of the chakra well-being and some useful tips.

You shall be mortified!

i take drugs

It is tornado season and I have been glued to the weather channel. Usually I don´t watch television but we wanted to know if we should take some action. I am a total rookie when it comes to tornadoes. What has caught my attention is the advertisements. They are all for medication. To keep you pain-free,  sneeze free  and make you sleep. But the message is you should buy the product out of shame! You should be mortified if you sneeze at a school concert. And the killing look the old lady in front of you sends your way. Should make you understand that you do not belong! This is an assembly for non sneezing people only!

In the first place, if you are sneezing, you are not well. You should rest and get yourself healthy. I am truly thankful for the medication upbringing I got. Medication is for emergencies. There are few things that hot tea with honey and lemon, hot bath and sleep can´t  fix. If we are feeling sick. Our body is at dis-ease. We should listen.

Rest is the best thing when we are feeling sick. There are some herbs and remedies that I find useful.  If I feel that I am coming down with something. The first thing I take is olive leaf extract. I find it to  work before I get sick and it boosts the immune system. Second stage I take Echinacea , I use the concentrated liquid version , Vitamin c in large doses  1000 mg is what I take to boost my immune system. Tea with licorice root is really good to keep the throat clear. I sometimes make green tea with fresh ginger and cayenne pepper for my throat.

Garlic is  magical. If you slice the garlic and put it between two slices of apple It´s no problem chewing it raw. (Trick my nine-year old taught me). If there is something going on in my throat the garlic kills everything. A juice of carrot, with ginger and oranges is good to boast the immune system. If you can get a shot of wheat grass and ginger, that is one juice that is like a power plant!

If I can´t sleep I take a blend of calcium magnesium, it calms me down.

I find it useful to drink water, water is the best remedy nature has to offer. If you are drinking enough water , your urine is light yellow, if it gets dark yellow or brownish you are definitely not drinking enough water. People that live of their voice monitor their urine. Because the first things that you lose is your voice if you dry out.

At least these commercials are made to feed the; I -got- to- have -that-so- that -I -won´t- look -like -an-idiot- to- the- strangers -I might -sneeze- in- front -of!

«What will they think?» I´s just not cool using shame as a motivator to buy something.

Eat alive and you will thrive

This is Yuri Elkaim and  he has some additional info on how to boost the immune

system.

Nice lecture almost 10  minutes. ( I will come back to Yuri later)

So be shameless! And take matter in your own hands!

Facing the fear of not being worthy.

I am a sucker for good storytellers. It does not ruin the experience if they are smart and gifted too. Brené Brown is one of these gems that has shared her research on TED. She is spot on how the people who have;

1. Sence of courage to be imperfect

and

2.Embrace vulnerability

Are the ones that believe they are worthy. This is the opposite of  a codependent like me. I believed that I was not worthy untill I learned that I was,  by taking the steps of the  CODA  program. But I was damn good faking it.  I had to take down the mask and face my fears. I entered a really hard masters program. Many of the people there were professionals. What I saw watching them is that they admitted their mistakes, they laughed at their failures. I had tried really hard to keep face. Not show my weaknesses. How on earth could I do all the things that I was doing if I was going to be emotional?

But there comes a time we have to give up. Embrace the little boy´s and girls inside us. Abandoned, neglected, hurt. And let them be what they are. With positive traits and the negative as well. I have learned that my character defects were my defense mechanisms. I was not ready to face them until my child was really ill. I was willing to let go of my codependence because if I was going to be of any use to my son, I could not be codependent. It was not an option. But that was how far I was willing to go. I could easily have died . Repressing my feelings and overwork until I fell down . I was beginning to feel the serious effect that stress has on the body. Emotional stress and work related stress. I was doing too many things. If my son had not got seriously ill. I would probably have worked myself to death. (In the end) My husband had tried to get me to do something about my codependence since we met. But no! I had to wait and  watch myself get eaten up from inside until the call came from the hospital. Only then I could rise up as the lioness protecting her young. I was willing to be healthy for my son. That is why I thank for his substance abuse. It helped me get onto the path of recovery.

I am worthy, and I am blessed.

Save money and loose weight?

Win win situation

I have often thought about buying a car, especially when I have been fighting strong wind almost flying off. I have been on the verge of giving in and walk into the car dealers and buy myself a small car. But then I calm down and  do the math once again, and come to the same conclusion as previous times. It is not worth it! You can learn more here about the cost of owning a car. Car is not an investment it is consumption, it devaluates every year, it has reparation costs, it runs on expensive juice and the insurance, registration fees and taxes it all adds up. It is ridiculous how much it costs. And with the prices of gas today!

The different mindset

Walking and using a bicycle becomes more and more appealing. But how are our surroundings designed? Not that bicycle friendly are they?. But it is possible to avoid using a car, but it takes a different mindset. It takes   planning. And if there is no public transport it  takes a lot of effort. But I have to say it is possible! I thought I would definitely have to drive since I was going to stay in the US for one year I knew it was going to be a challenge. But it is the same as everywhere, the location where you live has a great deal to say. I can walk to my class, my daughter can walk to her school. I can walk to minimart but I have to use a bicycle to go shopping. Before you try the bicycle lifestyle you have to do some serious planning. When I bought my house the location was carefully selected to support my car free lifestyle. My husband likes driving so he does not care as much as I do about the location. I admit it can be hard, but in the end of the day it is worth the benefits that a car free lifestyle has to offer.

The sweet sprincle of toxins

Are we deliberately being poisoned?

When thinking about toxins in food, we commonly connect it with pesticides used in the production. But mother nature is not perfect so we have to manipulate her and then we get the  GMO foods. When the food is processed we add chemicals  like Aspartame or MSG to make things taste better. Then we wrap the whole thing in BPA , the plastic chemical Bispenol A used in food packaging. Hungry?

Who is protecting the general public?

We wonder what happened and why people are getting sick? But none of these chemicals or additives are illegal. Lobbyists ensure that they will not be banned in the near future. With a big smile people making the decisions are poisoning their fellow-men in name of what? Money? So the 1% can gain more profit and the rest has to pay with their health?

The regulation comes from us, the people. We can not count on the regulators. That is why we have to be responsible and ask questions. Avoid foods that are conterminated. We need to educate ourselves and make the choices that we can live with, a healthy life.

FDA rules on continuing to allow BPA in food packaging.

Why is  Bispenol-A or  BPA not banned? FDA decided to let the show go on.     FDA decided not ban the use of BPA in food packaging.  That is amazing in light of the numerous research that show that BPA , is contributing to cancer, cardiovascular disease and probably best known cause of damage to the reproductive system especially in men. Here is more on the subject.

In the Video the research of Frederic Vam Saal is mentioned, his studies that low dosage of BPA has health risks. Especially concerning the reproductive system.

Bon appetit??

The transition routine.

Stress release

I find the videos from»The yoga solution» with Tara Styles helpful. They are easy to follow and the stress release routine she presents here I find works really well.

It is wonderful for someone like me , who is a beginner traveling  the path of yoga, to be able to watch at home and do the stress release exercise. I know that yoga is a way of life. But for us who have not mastered it yet. Baby steps can  be helpful.

The bridge between work and home

She mentions the transition time between work and life. That is nice way to put it. And I think that we should pay attention and make the transition. Leave the work at work. I had the bad habit of bringing my work with me home. Then I was in neither place. Not fully at home and neither fully at work because when I was at work I felt guilty not being there for my family.

YOGA

YOGA (Photo credit: Raios de Luz - Gláucia Góes)

But even when life was at it´s worst for me. My 20-30 minute bicycle ride (in any weather) really made my day. From work to home I got to sweat the day out and the best part was that there was no phone or computer just me and the bike. These minutes often saved my sanity for the day.

Take your time

When I look back I realized this was my daily exercise along with my meditation.

Water and oxygen

Deutsch: Stilles Mineralwasser, d.h. kohlensäu...Have you ever had the plumber come to your house and cut off the water? It is then you realize how important the water is. We use it without a thought, we do not acknowledge  the importance of it untill it is not accessible anymore.

Oxygen  we rarely think about either. I had  a frightening experience about eight years ago.

I had a demanding job, four kids and I was taking some courses at the university as well. It came to a point that, I could not breathe. It felt like I could only use 50% of my lung capacity. It was stress catching up with me once again. It frightened me all the way into a yoga class. That was one of my first sessions of yoga.  I have been in and out since. Deep breath is highly underestimated and the best thing is that it is for free!

Breathe in- breathe out!

A healthy person has many wishes. A sick person has only one wish, getting health back.
